When Rita reached the Huddlestons’ on Saturday evening, all she wanted to do was see Lucy. Instead, she met the entire family in the family room. As all eyes shot toward her direction when she burst into the room, she realized she had forgotten. It was time for their family gathering. A little surprised to see David there, she focused on the others.

She covered her mouth with a palm. “Oops. Sorry! I forgot you guys have some sort of gathering around this time. I didn’t intend to interrupt.” She took a step backward before Mrs. Huddleston waved her inside.

“Hey, Rita. Come on in. You’re practically family. Come, get a seat, and pull it close.” When Rita hesitated since David was sitting among them, Mrs. Huddleston was even more insistent. “Tanner, since you ate the last cookie, why don’t you get Rita some snacks so she can join us, eh?” Mrs. Huddleston pointed to her friend. “And, Lucy, move your seat sideways so her seat can slide in right next to yours. That makes it easier for you two to chat as I’m assuming she came to see you.”

The dear woman’s smile melted any resistance Rita had left, so she crossed into the room while Tanner disappeared toward the kitchen. When Rita pulled the chair close, Lucy shifted hers sideways. This being a cool but not cold fall evening, a fireplace stayed empty at the center of the room. A smile stretched her lips at the warm memories of the time she’d spent here during winter many years ago.

She and Lucy had dreamed of the future they wanted to have. They planned it so eloquently to the smallest detail—including silly things like favorite wedding nail polish and shoes—and none of that had happened. Instead, they both got kidnapped, almost lost their lives, and were grateful just to be alive. And breathing. And home.

Yes, there were still things they didn’t have that others did. But she was more thankful for the life that she and Lucy and Ashley did have.

Knowing that they were alive was a miracle in itself. “Hi, everyone. I didn’t mean to barge into the family meeting, or gathering, as Lucy calls it. Please let me know if my presence makes anybody awkward.” She darted her gaze toward David—who was looking toward Tanner as he returned with the snacks and a drink for her.

Disappointed that her opportunity for him to object so she could leave did not register, she relaxed her shoulders and decided to have a good time with her friend and her friend’s family. She and David hadn’t had their make-it-or-break-it conversation yet, so she wouldn’t make assumptions about where they stood. Moreover, it seemed he’d been fully accepted as part of this family since the last time she was here, so she’d not want to make him feel uncomfortable in his home among his family. Keeping away from him and focusing on the others was her best bet. She was here for Lucy, and she’d focus on that.
